Juror’s Statement.
In jurying PaperWest, I was very impressed with the quality of the works submitted both in form and content. I found myself drawn to selecting small groupings of work, presumably by the same artist, as opposed to choosing a broader set of pieces for the exhibition. For me, the dialogue that began to take place between the works in each smaller group expanded into a conversation between other groupings. When I look at the exhibition as a whole, I see the artists expressing compelling questions and viewpoints within the lens of the western landscape. The human element is often implied rather than overtly stated, but there is no doubt the importance of place is paramount to the human condition for these artists. I hope the resulting exhibition is a selection of works on paper that is visually poetic and aesthetically coherent for the audience, and I truly appreciate the opportunity to have viewed so many new and exciting pieces through this process.
