The mission of the art teaching major is to:
- educate teacher candidates with innovative models for teaching art education that bridge theoretical knowledge, creative expression and pedagogical practices
- prepare critical teachers of art education who value cultural difference, civic participation and the role of the arts in school and community settings;
- prepare teacher candidates for certification in the state of Utah;
- give students a strong understanding of the role the arts play in education and society
- develop a student’s proficiency in art production, aesthetics, art criticism and art history
Art Teaching Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)
The Art Teaching BFA Kindergarten – Twelfth Grade Licensure Program Description:
The purpose of the BFA Art Teaching Kindergarten – Twelfth (K-12) Grade Licensure Program is to prepare elementary, junior high, middle school, and high school visual art educators. Competent K-12 visual art teaching requires both in-depth knowledge of subject matter (art) and skill in applying educational concepts and principles that are developmentally appropriate. The College of Education’s Urban Institute for Teacher Education (UITE) oversees teacher licensure at the University of Utah. UITE is located in SAEC 2264. Note: Licensing is dictated by specific deadlines. Students pursuing an educator license should contact the UITE as soon as possible to learn about deadlines, background check requirements, and student teaching.
Students graduate with a Secondary Teaching License (6-12) in Visual Arts as well as a Secondary Visual Arts Endorsement with the K-6 extension from the Utah State Board of Education.
For students in the Art Teaching BFA degree program who are not pursuing a K-12 teaching license, please schedule an appointment to see a CFA Advisor to discuss alternative class options available within the program of study.
