Call for Entries
Organized by the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Utah, this national competitive juried exhibition will showcase contemporary works on paper by artists throughout the USA. The exhibition will take place in the Gittins Gallery, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Eligibility & Media
All artists (18 years and older) residing in the USA are eligible to enter up to 3 original works that are either constructed from paper, or utilize a paper support. Works in Book Arts, Collage, Original Digital Prints, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking (including Monoprints) and 3D Paper Works are eligible. Works must have been completed in the last two years (Current students and employees of the University of Utah are ineligible to apply).

Max 2D paper size : 44 x 30 inches. Max framed size: 50 x 36 inches. Work must be framed. Paper works mounted on panes do not need to be framed but must be wired.
Maximum 3D size: 24 x 24 x 24 inches

We will not consider offset reproductions, nor digital reproductions of artwork originally produced in another medium.

Sam Vernon is a visual artist who earned her MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University. Her installations combine Xeroxed drawings, photographs, paintings, and sculptural components in an exploration of personal narrative and identity. Recent solo exhibitions at venues include: San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora; UT Downtown Gallery, Knoxville, Tennessee; G44 Centre for Contemporary Photography, Toronto; and Seattle Art Museum, Olympic Sculpture Park.
Her work has been part of groups exhibitions at, among other institutions, California African American Museum; San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Barney Savage Gallery and The Cooper Union, New York.

Honors received include San Francisco Artadia Awards finalist; Sally and Don Lucas Artists Program (LAP) Visual Arts Fellowship; Artistes en Résidence, Clermont-Ferrand, France; Fountainhead Residency, Miami; Helen Watson Winternitz Award, Yale University; Emma Bee Bernstein Fellowship, A.I.R. Gallery, Brooklyn, and A.I.R. Gallery Emerging Arts Fellowship.

Collaborative projects include visual art contributor to The Arsonist, a play by Mai Sennaar, at Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco; Broadside Press, with poets Danez Smith and Nathan McClain; and Black Women Arts for Black Lives Matter, New Museum, New York; and performer, Ganggang: Creative Misunderstandings Series, organized by Alejandro Guzman, Brooklyn Museum.

Vernon has been a panelist, moderator, or guest lecturer at, among others, San Francisco State University; University of California, Berkeley; Watkins College of Art, Nashville; Utah State University; Barnard College; Union College; and Voelker Orth Museum, Queens, New York.

Notification emails: Friday, 27th August 2021.

Accepted works delivery deadline: Friday, 1st October 2021.

Exhibition: 18th October – 12th November 2021.

Please enter up to 3 works through this site.
Images (jpgs) should be sized at 72 dpi, 2500 pixels at the longest dimension. Each image should be labelled 1, 2 or 3. Followed by name, title, size and medium. Names will not be seen by the juror.


Entry Fee

A non-refundable fee of $20.00.
All entries must be uploaded by 30th July 2021.


Delivery & Return of Accepted Artworks

Works accepted must be either hand-delivered or shipped ready for installation. Paper 2D Works must be framed under plexi (no glass permitted); works must be securely mounted and framed with wire for hanging. Accepted works that require special installation must be accompanied with instructions and all necessary hardware for exhibition. Paper works attached to a panel do not need to be under plexi or framed.
Square edged metal or wooden frames only. No ornate frames.

All shipping and insurance costs for artwork to and from the University of Utah are the responsibility of the artist. Make sure your shipping box is sturdy enough to reuse for return shipping and includes sufficient packing. PLEASE NO PACKING PEANUTS.

Prepaid return postage and a pre-addressed mailing label must accompany all artwork. No cash payments for return shipping and no C.O.D.’s.

Hand-delivered works will be available for pick up from the Gittins Gallery: November 13th, thru 15th, 2021, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.


Sales & Awards
Sales will be encouraged and the organizers will put buyers in contact with artists. No commission will be collected on artwork sold through the exhibition. A number of awards will be given. The entry fee is used only for awards, juror costs, cost of website registration and marketing. (Awards in 2019 were $4900.00).


Responsibility

The University of Utah Department of Art and Art History will exercise reasonable care in handling but cannot insure works while in transit. Works are insured during the exhibition. The University of Utah Department of Art and Art History reserves the right to install the accepted works in the manner deemed necessary for exhibition or security reasons. Works that differ markedly from the submitted image will be disqualified. Accepted and exhibited artwork may be reproduced for promotional purposes. Sending an entry constitutes an agreement by the artist to the conditions set forth above. The names of all accepted artists, images of their work and images of the exhibition will be documented on the Art & Art History website.
